A New Mix for Your Listening Pleasure

DJ Vettie Vette presents Everybody Loves The Sunshine: Summer Mix 2009

I was shocked the day MIchael Jackson died and now when I think about it, it still hurts a little. Mostly because there will never be another person who can do what he did in this lifetime. He is the King. This was further confirmed when I went to the Philippines and saw for my own eyes the global impact he had. They were playing one of his concerts on big screens in most of the Manila malls. It was a great sight to see and it inspired me to put together this mix. I didn’t want it to be just a Michael Jackson tribute mix, so I thought I would construct a mix around a few of my favorites from his collection. I usually have my mixes a little more planned out – but this one was a little more spontaneous. Just like any Michael Jackson song, one is compelled to dance and I honestly felt like I was playing out at a party when I made this one. Mostly vinyl w/ a little help from Traktor. 🙂

1. Rock With You (Frankie Knuckles edit) – Michael Jackson
2. Get It – Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson
3. Private Eyes – Hall and Oates
4. Everything She Wants – Wham!
5. Dancing In the Key of Life – Steve Arrington
6. Love Bazaar – Sheila E.
7. Automatic – Pointer Sisters
8. Lessons In Love – Level 42
9. Say, Say, Say – Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney
10. You Know How to Love Me – Phyllis Hyman
11. Victim – Candi Staton
12. It Should Have Been You – Gwen Guthrie
13. Let’s Hear it For the Boy – Deniece Williams

Sistamatik Saves Some Lives – AGAIN

Sistamatik, originally uploaded by joeytoofresh.

I love sharing my skills for a worthy cause. We raised money for Kamay at Puso, an organization in the Philippines aiding toxic waste victims in the town of Madapdap, Pampanga. It was also the Sistamatik reunion – it’s been a while since all three of us played together. Can’t wait to do it again!

Hardest part of the evening is gettin’ the crowd going…

Yvette’s crowd, originally uploaded by joeytoofresh.

And when a finicky house crowd starts to do freaky things on the dancefloor while I beat the shit out of Steve Arrington’s, “Way Out”, it’s a job a well done. My set was early by DJ standards – 11pm, but my goal for the night was to make my DJ mentor/good friend RAS happy during 40th birthday party and to get his crowd…yes HIS crowd…into the groove. I knew I was doing something right when he kept giving me the nod of approval and the house heads started going 4 to the floor.

I felt like it was one of the best sets I’ve ever played, albeit a short one because once I got settled in after the technical problems, my mixes were clean, and I was having fun w/ the crowd.

Brooklyn Keeps On Takin’ It: The Afro-Punk Block Party

I’ve been going to quite a few events this summer and almost all of them have been $Free.99. The quality of these events have been out of this world. As many of you know – I have wide open ears when it comes to music. Afropunk is a fun event because you get a little bit of everything – rock, hip hop, punk and soul. As with any outdoor BK event, you’re bound to run into everybody.

From fellow Pinays like Fly Lady Di:

Or R&B/Soul divas like Ms. N’dea Davenport. I admit to cheesin’ it up when I met her and telling her that I have every album and play at least one Brand New Heavies song during my set (no joke).
